Project Summary

This exciting new build project was delivered on a very restricted site within the Londonderry Conservation Area and was co-joined to a Grade B listed building. This project involved the construction of a new Performing Arts Centre with theatre, music and drama facilities, student centre and various vocational teaching spaces as an extension to the existing Strand Road Site at NWRC. The proposed 5 storey scheme occupied two separate but adjacent sites either side of the busy Strand Road in Derry. The client brief was to deliver a striking new entrance to the campus that would be welcoming to students and members of the public alike. The scheme provided the opportunity to deliver a unified and cohesive appearance to the existing accommodation and provide universal access to all. Key challenges included

  • Constructed adjacent to and over a main road that was kept in operation throughout the project. The two new buildings were joined by a pedestrian bridge at level 4
  • Extensive discussions with Statutory Consultees to gain planning permission on programme
  • We provided an affordable proposal that achieved all the educational requirements
  • Complex phasing and site remediation strategy for the demolition of the existing buildings whilst ensuring that safety of the general public and students was maintained at all times

Benefits

The purpose of the new-build extension and refurbishment was to upgrade current facilities which we achieved as follows:

  • Provided an integrated access and control strategy that allowed access to the campus for members of the public whilst ensuring the ongoing safety of the students & staff.
  • The teaching theatre was designed for public performances providing a Community Theatre in the heart of Derry. This could be extended to the music and recording facilities
  • The scheme proposal allowed for added value to be delivered to the college’s curriculum through innovative use of existing spaces. High level gantries over the theatre auditorium extended teaching for all students in a safe environment for the study of all aspects of theatre craft.
