Completion: Phase 1 - Dec 2020/ Phase 2 - Dec 2022

Value: £14.5m

Project Summary

In December 2022 NI Water completed a major upgrade to the Warrenpoint Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW), significantly improving the quality of treated water discharging to Carlingford Lough.

Originally designed to serve a population of 16,195, the WwTW had became overloaded due to a population increase which posed strain on the system leading to continuous discharges of untreated wastewater into the lough.

Delivered in two phases; Phase 1 introduced three new activated sludge lanes, enhancing the biological treatment process and addressing immediate capacity shortfalls. Phase 2 added advanced secondary treatment systems, enabling the facility to meet growing demands on the catchment area.

The result is a modern, efficient Ww treatment facility capable of serving a projected population of 21,146 in the next 25 years. The improved operational performance ensures consistent delivery of high-quality effluent.

McAdam undertook the feasibility assessment and the Project Management of the construction phase.

Benefits

This project addressed critical capacity and environmental challenges to the existing facility. The benefits of the new infrastructure were realised almost immediately, with sample results showing that the final effluent to Carlingford Lough is of a much higher quality because of the significant investment.
