Newtownards Road Flood Alleviation

Northern Ireland Water

Client: Northern Ireland Water

Completion: 2018

Value: £3.2 Million

Project Summary

In 2018 NI Water completed essential sewerage upgrade works in the Upper Newtownards Road, Hawthornden Road, Green Road and Eastleigh Dale areas of East Belfast. McAdam completed detailed design, principal designer, project management and significant customer liaison on this challenging project on one of the most highly trafficed commuter routes in Belfast.

Extensive modelling was carried out to identify suitable solutions resulting in a Multi-Phase project designed to alleviate flooding. Phase 1 and 2 were completed including some advance work on the Upper Newtownards Road delivered in advance of Department for Infrastructure’s Belfast Rapid Transit (BRT) service. The scheme involved laying 1.8 km of new and upgraded sewers 600-1200mm diameter at depths of up to 6m. Works were located on a main commuter shopping route and disruption was minimised through design of trenchless installations across major junctions and out of hours working.

Benefits

This essential improvement work will improve the local sewerage infrastructure and reduce the likelihood of flooding in the Upper Newtownards Road, Hawthornden Road, Green Road and Eastleigh Dale areas.
