Northern Ireland Water

Client: Northern Ireland Water

Completion: 2004

Value: £24 Million

Project Summary

Drumaroad Water Treatment Works near Ballynahinch treats water from Silent Valley and Ben Crom Reservoirs in the Mourne Mountains. It supplies Belfast and much of County Down with 155million litres per day of high-quality drinking water. The reinforced concrete filter tanks and process elements are enclosed in four steel framed industrial buildings covering 7000sqm.

The buildings include offices, laboratories, and welfare facilities. The industrial process elements include large chemical storage areas and vehicle handling systems which incorporate full environmental protection measures. An adjacent Energy Recovery installation houses a hydroelectric turbine which contributes to the energy needs of the works.

McAdam undertook detailed civil and structural design on this complex and challenging project liaising closely with the process and MEICA team.

Benefits

The construction of the works represented the completion of the £62 Million Aquarius project designed to provide a safe, secure drinking water supply to over 300,000 consumers in the Co Down and Belfast regions.
