Project Summary

McAdam were appointed as Project Manager, C&S Engineer, Architect, Landscape Architect and Principal Designer services by the Mid Ulster District Council and DAERA on this £1.8m Tourism project at Ballyronan Marina

 

The project involved the following:

 

  • New Inclusive Play Area
  • Four floating Houseboats and associated pontoons / access / services
  • Viewing pier.
  • New entrance and car park upgrade to include new lighting and street furniture
  • Refurbishment of existing facilities in Community Building with a new entrance and refurbishment of all the public areas including enlargement of the public toilets and provision of a new “Changing Places” facility
  • Remedial works to the existing jetties
  • Extensive soft and hard landscaping & replacement of all the exterior public spaces
  • Upgrade of Loughshore walks

 

The design team liaised with both the MUDC and various community stakeholders to tailor the development of the site to meet local community requirements as well as the needs of visiting tourists.

 

The site has proved a great success particularly the new and extensive play area, the viewing pier providing spectacular views across Lough Neagh and the Houseboats which provide unique, high quality accommodation in such a tranquil spot.

Benefits

McAdam delivered all of Mid Ulster Councils requirements and successes included:

 

  • Creation of a new tourist destination, bringing visitors from provincewide to stay in the new upgraded facilities
  • Creating better connectivity between the village and public facilities involving the creation of a new woodland walk connecting the playpark and picnic area
  • 4 no. new houseboats have created a ‘glamping on water’ concept
  • The new features have meant this facility has been added to the national database of accessible facilities for people with disabilities
